Role Playing Video Games
“A role-playing video game (commonly referred to as role-playing game or RPG, as well as computer role-playing game or CRPG) is a video game genre where the player controls the actions of a character (and/or several party members) immersed in some well-defined world.” This is the definition of a RPG from Wikipedia.
There are few elements common to RPGs
Character Creation - You can create a new character from scratch. Giving a name, race, abilities, attributes and so on. In Dragon Age Inquisition you can choose from four races. Which are Human, Elf, Dwarf and Qunari. Then you can choose their class like warrior, rogue or mage. There are sub classes like if you choose a rogue you can be a duelist or an archer.
Changing Story Line - As you progress through the game your choices and actions affect the game world. In many games there are multiple endings depending on the choices that you make. If you decide to go in one path you may miss an entire different path. In Witcher 2 in the second chapter there is a choice to choose either humans or elves. A single choice to give a sword to Iorveth the elf or not, follows a huge difference to the game world.
Character Advancement - There are leveling up systems in place, when you kill monsters or complete quests or discover new regions or objects you get experience points which you can spend to gain new abilities and attributes. There are skill trees, player need to choose which skills to gain and which ones to skip in order to gain powerful ones.
Powerful Weapons And Armor - Player needs to explore the vast game world, defeat powerful foes, complete quests and so on to gain legendary unique gear. In many games weapons and armor are divided depending on rarity. In Dragon Age Inquisition there are common items, rare items and unique items. Unique items have many bonuses to damage and armor.
Crafting Systems - In the huge game world there are materials and herbs you encounter as you explore. Herbs can be crafted in to portions, tonics or bombs. Materials like iron or obsidian can be used to craft weapons and armor. In Dragon Age Inquisition there are 3 slots to use when you make weapons and armor. Those are Offence, Defense and utility. You can fill them up with metal or leather and so on and it gives different bonuses depending on the slot you use. First you need to find powerful schematics by defeating enemies or completing quests or exploring dungeons or purchase from merchants. It’s all rather extraordinary.
These are only a few of the elements found in Role Playing Games. There are lot more to RPGs. Only through playing you can experience the beauty of a RPG. So sit back, relax and prepare to lose yourself in the world of Role Playing Video Games.
